[00:00:06] Speaker A: Everybody, it's Rick and Rob. Welcome back to the Nomad Pastor podcast. [00:00:10] Speaker B: How you been? [00:00:10] Speaker A: I've been good. [00:00:11] Speaker B: Good. [00:00:11] Speaker A: I just realized that your shirt, that's the new. Well, it's not a new Dixon, but that's your club colors. [00:00:18] Speaker B: Yeah. This is the one that I got. Remember that had the funky inside on it? [00:00:23] Speaker A: That's right. [00:00:23] Speaker B: I had it redone. [00:00:24] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:00:25] Speaker B: And I had to get new snaps. [00:00:27] Speaker A: Okay. [00:00:27] Speaker B: I had to put new snaps on it. [00:00:29] Speaker A: Yeah. It looks good. [00:00:30] Speaker B: So. Thank you. I love it. I love it. [00:00:32] Speaker A: Love the club colors. One Dixon makes that one. That's BFC colors, too. [00:00:36] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:00:37] Speaker A: It's actually not for BFC, but they call it the Jason. [00:00:40] Speaker B: Yeah, this was one of their. I can't say it online. [00:00:48] Speaker A: That's all right. [00:00:50] Speaker B: Yeah, it was one of their cancer church. [00:00:51] Speaker A: Yeah, that's one of their. [00:00:53] Speaker B: They have a hard stance against cancer. [00:00:55] Speaker A: Yeah, that's right. So look today, and maybe we could do multiple of these. I don't know. Right. But I want to talk about something in the sermon on the mount. [00:01:04] Speaker B: Okay. [00:01:05] Speaker A: Right. And it's Matthew seven, seven through twelve. [00:01:11] Speaker B: Okay. [00:01:11] Speaker A: Right. And it's the whole ask, seek and knock, and it says, ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be open to you. For everyone who asks receives. The one who seeks finds, and the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will you give him a snake? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask of him. So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you. For this sums up the law and the prophets. [00:01:57] Speaker B: I wonder. I'm different. [00:02:05] Speaker A: Go ahead. [00:02:05] Speaker B: No, what I'm saying is I wonder where we get off track with praying and asking, seeking, knocking, and then verse twelve and everything. Therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you. For this is the law of the prophets. [00:02:35] Speaker A: Where does it take that turn? [00:02:37] Speaker B: Yeah. So here's my thing. Because with this being the way of the prophets, right. [00:02:50] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:02:50] Speaker B: The law and the prophets. For this is the law and the prophets. Remember when the rich young ruler came to Jesus and he said, what have I got to do? Give it all up? Right. So you give everything away. And then he was asked again, I'm drawing a blank where he's talking about, love your neighbor and then love you. Love the Lord your God with all your heart. [00:03:19] Speaker A: Yep. [00:03:20] Speaker B: You know, and then he says, on this hinges all of the law and the prophets. [00:03:28] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:28] Speaker B: And then in this passage, in everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the law and the prophets. Love is the key. [00:03:44] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:45] Speaker B: So let's go back to verse seven for a minute. [00:03:48] Speaker A: So verse seven, ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be open to you. [00:03:54] Speaker B: Ask what? [00:03:55] Speaker A: Well, I think that's a key to this, right. All throughout scripture, Jesus and Paul and everywhere throughout the New Testament, in my opinion. Let me just start with that. Everything is teaching us to draw closer to Christ, right. Just every day one step closer, right? And I feel like what they're saying here is ask and I'm going to give it to you. But if you're as close to Jesus as you can get, right. If you're walking that way, your heart desires what Christ desires. So what you're going to be asking for isn't I want powerball, right? It isn't, I want a brand new car, right? I'm going to be asking for what my heart desires. And my heart desires what Christ desires because I had a heart, right? So when he says, ask and it will be given to you. [00:05:03] Speaker B: Okay, but he doesn't stop. [00:05:05] Speaker A: No, no. Then he says, seek and you will find. [00:05:08] Speaker B: What are you looking for? [00:05:09] Speaker A: Well, I'm looking for Christ. [00:05:10] Speaker B: Exactly. [00:05:11] Speaker A: I'm looking for the joy from Jesus, right, right. That spiritual joy. Like, are you really truly seeking God? Because if you're really seeking God, you're going to find it, right? If you're not, you're not. [00:05:28] Speaker B: You're not knocking. [00:05:29] Speaker A: The door will be opened. [00:05:30] Speaker B: What door are you trying to find? [00:05:32] Speaker A: Well, it's the door to salvation, the. [00:05:34] Speaker B: Door that gets you to Jesus. [00:05:35] Speaker A: He's the door. [00:05:36] Speaker B: Exactly. [00:05:37] Speaker A: Right. He says, I'm the door. I'm the way I am the only way. I am the door. [00:05:42] Speaker B: No man comes to the father except for me, right? [00:05:45] Speaker A: So when it says knock and the door will be opened, he's saying, I will open the door for you. [00:05:50] Speaker B: I've got this. I've got you, right? So you ask about the way that I read this scripture in my p brain little mind, right? Ask about the things that are of Jesus. Ask about what he's about. Look for those things. Seek and you're going to find it, right? If you look, you're going to find the ways of Christ. You're going to understand the difference in evolution versus creation, right? You're going to seek those things out. If you're going to come this far with this, you're going to knock on doors to find out more about Christ. You have that desire to be close to him, you have that desire to be that intimate with him. So you ask about it, you look for it, you seek the knowledge of Jesus, and then you knock, and you're finding the doors to open to get to him. I think where we misinterpret things too many times is we think that we have arrived once we realize our salvation, and so we stop doing what drove us to the point in the first place. [00:07:16] Speaker A: Yeah. And let me just say, look, we've talked about it before on the podcast, right? I'm not an advocate for a prosperity preacher. [00:07:28] Speaker B: No, absolutely not. Absolutely not. [00:07:31] Speaker A: And I think sometimes this is misinterpreted. [00:07:34] Speaker B: I think a lot of times it's misinterpreted. Yeah. [00:07:36] Speaker A: Because it's like, well, just ask and you're going to get it. [00:07:42] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:42] Speaker A: I need $1,000. I can't pay my rent. Right. [00:07:45] Speaker B: Yeah. Just speak it into existence and put your last $20 bill in the tithe bucket that goes by. [00:07:52] Speaker A: Speak it into existence. [00:07:53] Speaker B: God's going to give you a blessing. [00:07:54] Speaker A: Right? Yeah, but this has nothing to do with that. [00:07:58] Speaker B: Right. [00:08:00] Speaker A: And I love how he pivots. Right? And he says in verse nine, which of you, if your son asks for bread, are going to give him a stone? Now, that bread could represent so many things, right. But what he's saying is, which of you, if your son asked for something to sustain substance. Substance, right. [00:08:24] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:24] Speaker A: Something to keep them alive. [00:08:26] Speaker B: Right. [00:08:27] Speaker A: Which one are you going to give them? Something to drown. Right. Because the stone will drown them. Right. [00:08:33] Speaker B: Well, you can't eat it. [00:08:34] Speaker A: Can't eat it. [00:08:35] Speaker B: Right. Yeah. [00:08:38] Speaker A: It's no good to you. And he's saying you ain't going to do it. [00:08:44] Speaker B: No. Because it's your son. [00:08:46] Speaker A: Because you love them. [00:08:47] Speaker B: Right. [00:08:48] Speaker A: Well, just like that. I love you. Right. So if you're asking, it's going to be given to you. If you're asking with the. Right. [00:09:02] Speaker B: Think it's. This is a sidebar, okay? Do you think it's coincidental here that Jesus actually mentions bread and fish when he feeds the five thumb multitudes with two fish? [00:09:20] Speaker A: I don't think it's coincidental. Nothing in Jesus's life was coincidental. [00:09:23] Speaker B: Because what happens right after this, right? [00:09:26] Speaker A: Right. [00:09:26] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:27] Speaker A: Like, I'm going to feed you. But you know the other thing that he says right after this is the whole enter through the narrow gate. [00:09:36] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:36] Speaker A: Right. [00:09:37] Speaker B: Yeah. That's the next thing. [00:09:38] Speaker A: So not only is he saying, like, hey, you're not going to give your son bread, and you're not going to give your son a stone when he asks for bread, I'm not going to give you a stone when you ask for bread. [00:09:51] Speaker B: So what does that say about Christ as far as us asking, seeking and looking for him if we're truly seeking? [00:10:07] Speaker A: Well, he's always there. [00:10:08] Speaker B: He's going to be there. [00:10:09] Speaker A: He's always there waiting. [00:10:11] Speaker B: Right. [00:10:13] Speaker A: We're not slaves. We're not forced to do it. [00:10:16] Speaker B: Right. [00:10:16] Speaker A: But he's always there with open arms. [00:10:18] Speaker B: He's ready. [00:10:19] Speaker A: Like, I'm ready to love you. I already love you. I'm ready to show you that love. [00:10:24] Speaker B: I'm waiting to be able for you to accept it. [00:10:27] Speaker A: That's right. [00:10:28] Speaker B: And that's where we get. Not we, but people get sideways with what salvation is because, like you said, we're not slaves. [00:10:41] Speaker A: Right. [00:10:42] Speaker B: Well, why do you want to call him master of your life? Because I choose to. I've submitted myself because I know his ways are better than mine. [00:10:52] Speaker A: That's right. [00:10:53] Speaker B: I've submitted myself because I know that he is the only way to get to the father. [00:10:59] Speaker A: That's right. [00:10:59] Speaker B: I've submitted myself because I know that without him, I can't do a blessed thing. [00:11:05] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:06] Speaker B: I've submitted myself to him because I know that the calling on my life is more important than what my chosen things to do are until I choose to do the calling on my life. [00:11:19] Speaker A: Right. [00:11:21] Speaker B: So we get sideways. Whether it be in prosperity gospel, whether it be in our own meism and selfishness, or whether it be in peer. [00:11:35] Speaker A: Pressure. [00:11:38] Speaker B: We get upside down in those things. Instead of just being humble enough to ask, to seek and to knock, to look for it. To find him. [00:11:51] Speaker A: Yeah. Well, to find him, I think he's saying you don't have to look very far. No, you don't, right? No. [00:11:59] Speaker B: Open your eyes. [00:12:00] Speaker A: Yeah. Just open your eyes. I'm here. [00:12:02] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:12:02] Speaker A: Right. I'm not going to let you starve now. Like I said earlier, you've got to be asking for the right thing in the right heart. Right. He's going to hear you, but he may not answer you if you're like, I need $1,000. Right. [00:12:24] Speaker B: Well, the same thing in proverbs where it talks about the desires of your heart when your heart desires him. [00:12:32] Speaker A: Right. [00:12:38] Speaker B: I heard somebody say one time, the Lord's going to give me a brand new corvette. Praise God. Because I'm speaking this into existence. That was his exact words. Right. And I'm like, dude, you're crazy in a Betty bug. [00:12:52] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:52] Speaker B: You can't speak material things into existence. [00:12:56] Speaker A: No. [00:12:58] Speaker B: And the only things that are going to come into existence are when we follow God's plan. So when we look for what God is leading us to through the holy spirit, when we look to those things to find what, here we go back again to verse seven, to seek. And you will find. If you're looking for what God wants out of your life, then you're obviously going to want to do them. [00:13:28] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:29] Speaker B: So when you try to speak things like that into existence, all you're doing is showing your ignorance of what the word is. [00:13:39] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:39] Speaker B: And you obviously haven't asked about Christ. You haven't asked Christ of him, and you haven't sought him out, and you haven't knocked on the door to find out what it's like to be a part of him. [00:13:52] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:53] Speaker B: And that's troublesome to me. [00:13:55] Speaker A: Well, I don't understand how people can't. And I think where I struggle is like, you, right? I'm in it, right. It's a one or a zero, right? People will be like, how can you believe that? How can you not? It's a one or a zero. Right. [00:14:18] Speaker B: Right. [00:14:19] Speaker A: I don't understand how you cannot believe it. [00:14:21] Speaker B: Right. [00:14:22] Speaker A: I don't understand how you can't have a heart change. How you can't see how you can look at creation and not recognize that there was a creator. [00:14:33] Speaker B: It's got to originate somewhere, right? Nothing comes from life, can't come from nothingness. [00:14:41] Speaker A: Right. Something can't come from nothing unless there was a creator that created it, right. And that's God. And so when I look at this, and it's like, ask, and I'm going to give it to you, seek and you're going to find. Knock and the door will open. All of those are saying, I'm here. I'm God, and I'm ready. I'm here and I'm ready. [00:15:07] Speaker B: And all you have to do is accept it. Just accept. [00:15:14] Speaker A: And he's telling you, you're going to have food. You can have bread. You can have a snake, a fish. Right. [00:15:21] Speaker B: Right. But let's shift gears a little bit. [00:15:27] Speaker A: Okay. [00:15:28] Speaker B: Let's get into. If you then be an evil verse twelve in everything. Therefore, treat the people the same way you want them to treat you. For this is the law and the prophets. [00:15:39] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:40] Speaker B: This is what's commonly known as the golden rule. [00:15:43] Speaker A: That's right. Love God, love people. [00:15:47] Speaker B: Love people. Right. That's really where we originally. [00:15:51] Speaker A: Where we got. Love God and love people. [00:15:53] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:54] Speaker A: Right. [00:15:54] Speaker B: Yeah. And everything. Treat people the same way you want them to treat you. This was something that was taught to me very young. Very young. [00:16:06] Speaker A: Right. [00:16:09] Speaker B: And it was something that I taught my children very young, and something that I enjoy seeing my grandchildren taught very young. In the golden rule. In high school, of course, everybody made jokes about, well, he who has the gold makes the rules. [00:16:30] Speaker A: I heard that. I said it. [00:16:32] Speaker B: Yeah. I wrote it in yearbooks. You know what I mean? [00:16:34] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:36] Speaker B: But at the same time, I knew in my heart of hearts and in the way that I projected myself that the way I treated people was the way I expected to be treated. [00:16:50] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:52] Speaker B: And I treated people that way so that I could be treated that way. [00:16:55] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:56] Speaker B: You see somebody broken down on the side of the road and you stop and help them. Right. Sure. I'm glad you stopped and helped. Well, my answer to that every single time is I would hope somebody would stop and help me if I was broke down. [00:17:12] Speaker A: Right. [00:17:13] Speaker B: Because too many times it's happened where it hasn't. [00:17:16] Speaker A: Right. [00:17:17] Speaker B: And so I want to be the hands and feet, because you never know what opportunity you're going to have to be able to witness somebody. I was talking to a guy a few months ago, and the guy is known in our world on my side of the fence as someone who. You've got a lot of activity going now. I asked him, I said, how many fights have you been in? He said, 188. I said, how many do you lose? He said, 188. [00:17:53] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:53] Speaker B: He said, I got my butt kicked four times. He said, and I kicked butt the other 184 times or 180 times, but I missed 188 times to share Jesus with somebody. So I lost all 188 fights. [00:18:10] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:18:11] Speaker B: And I thought, man, that's a great way to look at it because we get so wrapped up in ourselves. Here it is for you, goat in meism, that I think you should give me a new pair of gloves. [00:18:30] Speaker A: Right. [00:18:32] Speaker B: I think because you have two pairs that you should give me one. [00:18:35] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:18:35] Speaker B: Right. But at the same time, in my mind, I have two pairs. You need a pair, I'm going to give them to you. Right. If you don't need them, I'm not going to offer them. [00:18:46] Speaker A: That's right. [00:18:46] Speaker B: But my point is this, when we look for opportunities to be able to help somebody, to share the love of Christ with somebody so that they can understand the salvation that we enjoy, then we're actually doing the golden rule. And at the same time, the accountability that we build in that so that people understand. We talked about it this morning about people saying, you can't judge me. Yeah, I'm not trying to judge you. I'm being a fruit inspector. I'm looking at the actions that you've done and I'm gauging those in this way. I'm not saying whether or not you're going to heaven or hell. [00:19:37] Speaker A: Well, I think there's a difference between the Bible does teach you. It does teach you how to judge. The difference is I think we can't judge somebody's salvation. [00:19:50] Speaker B: Right. [00:19:50] Speaker A: That's the difference. Right. And I think there's not a different in the Bible. [00:19:57] Speaker B: Right. [00:19:58] Speaker A: So somebody takes two lines that says don't judge from Matthew and they don't follow up. They don't follow up. They don't read the next ten verses. [00:20:08] Speaker B: Or the first four in front of it. [00:20:10] Speaker A: That's right. And so fully acknowledge it's that we can't judge somebody salvation. We don't know what walk they're in. [00:20:20] Speaker B: Right. [00:20:22] Speaker A: But we are supposed to judge them. And I like how you say I'm a fruit inspector. [00:20:27] Speaker B: Right. [00:20:29] Speaker A: But it's much more than that. [00:20:30] Speaker B: It is. But that gets back to verse twelve here about treating people the way I expect Rick to tell me when I've done something that's offensive to the Lord that he's witnessed. Okay. And at the same time, I expect to be able to tell you those kind of things at the same time. Right. [00:20:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:20:55] Speaker B: So if I'm treating you that way so that you understand that's my perspective and that's my introspective and that's my expectation of what our relationship is, then I'm treating you the way that I want to be treated. I'm following the golden rule here. [00:21:15] Speaker A: Absolutely. But I think it's far too often in our society. Right. I will say, even for christians, people. [00:21:25] Speaker B: Don'T want to hear it because they don't want to step out of the limelight in their own limelight. [00:21:34] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:21:36] Speaker B: And that's a shame. [00:21:37] Speaker A: Or they just. Sorry you stayed up too late. [00:21:40] Speaker B: We had a podcast about that. [00:21:43] Speaker A: I actually didn't stay up too late. [00:21:45] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:21:45] Speaker A: I was in bed by nine. [00:21:47] Speaker B: Oh, wow. Go ahead. [00:21:47] Speaker A: I'm sorry, but they just don't want to do, sometimes they just don't want to do anything other than sit in. [00:21:55] Speaker B: The pew, check a box. [00:21:58] Speaker A: Right? I was there on Sunday. I stood up for five songs. I prayed, I went home. [00:22:06] Speaker B: Hold on, let's talk about something here. [00:22:10] Speaker A: Okay. [00:22:10] Speaker B: You stood up for five songs. You prayed. Did you pray or did you listen to somebody else pray? [00:22:15] Speaker A: It's always listening. [00:22:17] Speaker B: Exactly. So when you say those things and you categorize yourself in that way because you were at church Sunday morning, therefore you're christian, therefore you're saved, therefore you don't have to do anything else. Hogwash. [00:22:37] Speaker A: I agree with you. [00:22:38] Speaker B: Right. [00:22:40] Speaker A: It's the biggest lie I think christians tell themselves. [00:22:43] Speaker B: Exactly. [00:22:44] Speaker A: And that's what it is. I hate to admit it to people, right. But if all you do is you go to church on Sunday and you stand up when they tell you to stand up and you bow your head when they pray, listen to a message for 40 minutes and then you go. [00:22:57] Speaker B: Home, that doesn't make you a Christian. [00:22:59] Speaker A: That makes you nobody. [00:23:02] Speaker B: Exactly. That doesn't check everything off, right. That doesn't make you a Christian. [00:23:12] Speaker A: And so what about doing? That is ask and you will be given. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be open. [00:23:21] Speaker B: You don't hit any of those. [00:23:23] Speaker A: Not a one. [00:23:24] Speaker B: Not one. [00:23:24] Speaker A: Not one. And you don't hit verse twelve where it says so in everything. Do to others as you would have done to you. [00:23:32] Speaker B: Right. [00:23:32] Speaker A: Because you're not loving other people by. [00:23:36] Speaker B: You're not, are you? [00:23:38] Speaker A: I don't know what you do during the week. Right. [00:23:40] Speaker B: But still. [00:23:41] Speaker A: Yet. But just claiming I'm a good person isn't enough. [00:23:44] Speaker B: But just because you're in the company of saints doesn't make you a saint. [00:23:49] Speaker A: Amen. I agree. [00:23:51] Speaker B: The demons believe. [00:23:54] Speaker A: They do, but that's it. Right. [00:23:57] Speaker B: They believe in Jesus, but they're not going to do anything about it. [00:24:00] Speaker A: No. [00:24:00] Speaker B: So that's my point. Just because you're in a gathering with saints or people who are wanting to do, who are asking, who are seeking, who are knocking, that doesn't include you in what they're doing. [00:24:14] Speaker A: That's right. [00:24:15] Speaker B: You have to get involved. [00:24:16] Speaker A: That's right. [00:24:17] Speaker B: You have to do those things. You have to look for what Christ is and who he is and what he will do for you in salvation so that you can understand when he's feeding you with a loaf of bread. [00:24:33] Speaker A: Or a fish and he says, right, I'm going to do these things. [00:24:39] Speaker B: Right. But at the same time, the way that we get fed is from the word of God. [00:24:45] Speaker A: That's right. [00:24:46] Speaker B: Spiritually. [00:24:47] Speaker A: That's right. I've heard far too many christians say, well, you don't need to read the Bible. [00:24:53] Speaker B: Come on, man. I know. I've heard it too. Let's back up with that just a little bit. Are those the people who are trying to envelop themselves in a christian moniker when they're actually just checking a box and being at church and standing up for five songs and bowing their head when somebody else prays? [00:25:20] Speaker A: I don't know. [00:25:21] Speaker B: Obviously I believe they are. And here's why. [00:25:24] Speaker A: They like to say they're Christian. [00:25:25] Speaker B: They like to say that because if you are going to walk the walk, if you are going to talk the talk and put on the name of Christ as a follower of him, you can't willy nilly it at all. Now, are we perfect people? Absolutely not. [00:25:48] Speaker A: Well, I mean, there's only one perfect. [00:25:50] Speaker B: Are we going to mess up every day? Exactly. Does that discount the fact of what our moniker as a Christian is? No, not at all. [00:26:02] Speaker A: I believe it strengthens it. [00:26:03] Speaker B: I think so. [00:26:04] Speaker A: Right. [00:26:05] Speaker B: I think so. [00:26:06] Speaker A: That we're able to acknowledge that we're not perfect, that we have flaws, but. [00:26:13] Speaker B: We keep striving for it, but we're. [00:26:14] Speaker A: Trying to be better every day. [00:26:16] Speaker B: Every single day. [00:26:17] Speaker A: And that's that whole repentance and confession. [00:26:23] Speaker B: Right. [00:26:24] Speaker A: Two different words, two different meanings, two. [00:26:27] Speaker B: Different connotations to what they are in our lives. [00:26:29] Speaker A: That's right. And so if I'm truly repentant and confess of my sins, then I'm going to try to walk away from them. Right. And so my heart has changed. And when my heart has changed, I'm asking for what God wants me to ask for. And it may not be, oh, God needs this. It's what God wants in my life. [00:26:56] Speaker B: And the desires of your heart. [00:26:59] Speaker A: That's right. [00:27:00] Speaker B: Are more in line with what God desires for you. [00:27:03] Speaker A: Correct. [00:27:05] Speaker B: So that verse twelve. [00:27:07] Speaker A: That's right. [00:27:08] Speaker B: Can be played out properly. I love it. [00:27:12] Speaker A: Me too. That's a good one. [00:27:13] Speaker B: That was. [00:27:15] Speaker A: Anything to add before we land it? [00:27:17] Speaker B: I don't think so. [00:27:18] Speaker A: I think me either. [00:27:19] Speaker B: I think that's a perfect spot to land on right there. Folks, we want to thank you for being with us again today.
